Today is February 2nd and at Cordero we continue to celebrate Black History Month, information regarding Black History Month is available on the Sunday Digest Blog. Please feel free to utilize these resources at home with your children.

This is it, on Friday, we will come together to each our Community and support our students through the 10th Annual Cordero Dinner Dance. Come join us and over 100 of our closest supporters. It's not too late to get your ticket or a ticket for a friend! February 7, 2020 from 6:30-11p at the Chandelier in Bayonne. $70 per person

You can purchase tickets a number of ways:

2. Contact our Library Media Specialist Mrs. Pergola (jpergola@jcboe.org) and set up your ticket purchase!

Report cards will be distributed on Wednesday, the 5th from 1:30-3:00pm.  Students will be dismissed at 12:45pm. There will be no after school programs including C.A.S.P.E.R., YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, or Enrichment.

The 8th grade health permission slips were given out to the students.  Please read, sign and have your child return it to school by Wednesday February 5th.

This week is National School Counseling Week. Please show some love this week to our wonderful School Counseling Team, Ms. Pasquale and Ms. Poznanski.

Also this week, we will begin our annual support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients program. Our students will collect for this worthy charity throughout this month.

Pre-Sale for the middle school Valentine's candy-gram sponsored by our very own Spanish Honors Society is underway. Middle School Students can purchase a candy-gram which includes a message and lollipop for $1. Multiple purchases automatically enter the buyer into a drawing for a Valentine's Teddy Bear. Any questions, see Ms. Towers. 

An important note from Nurse Stone:

Your child must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school. If a child has vomited they can not return to school for 24 hours. These are state as well as district policies. Please be mindful not to send your child to school if they are sick especially during this flu season. Thank you for helping to keep Cordero as healthy as possible. 

Information regarding the coronavirus can be found on the CDC's website. No cases have been found in NJ. District Statement

The YMCA Program is expanding offerings over the weekends for arts and recreation. Please see their flyer on the Sunday Digest for more information. 

The final Class of 2020 uniform order has been extended to February 14th.  Please order enough shirts for the remainder of the school year.  We will not be ordering again. Order forms were sent home last week.

Extended Registration! Enrichment Registration will stay open through the weekend until Sunday at 10pm. By request we have also lifted the 2 class maximum for Prek and K students. Check out our class offerings at our Enrichment page. Class Parent Assistants and Onsite Coordinator still needed, email: enrichment@ps37pta.org for more info. 

Volunteer for the Safer Internet Day Celebration!  Thursday, February 13, 2020. (5:30pm to prep) 6pm-7:30pm in the Library. Volunteers needed to help: (1) set up and manage the food table; (2) facilitate table discussion on topics of internet safety (curriculum provided). Funded by a grant from PTA Connected Be Internet Awesome Family Workshop Grant Sponsored by Google. Contact Leslie@ps37pta.org to volunteer.

Thank all the families for supporting our PreK music 'green' initiative! A last reminder to pay for the spring semester, and a request to give to the scholarship fund.

Please be advised that Friday, January 31st is the end of the second marking period. Please confer with teachers should you have any questions about your child. 

Friday, January 31st is also a half day for students only with dismissal happening at 12:45. There is no CASPER, Enrichment, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, or extended day activities. Please be prompt as we will have professional development after dismissal.

PTA News

Registration for Enrichment Spring 2020 semester will open on Wednesday, January 29th at 8:00PM EST. The registration link will go live on the Enrichment page at that time. Contact enrichment@ps37pta.org with any questions.

Enrichment is 100% volunteer run by parents. In order to hold classes, PTA needs a number of roles to be filled. If we do not have enough assistants, we may need to cancel the classes or reduce the size of the Enrichment Program. Contact enrichment@ps37pta.org if you are interested as soon as possible. 

• Classroom Parent Assistants - $100 stipend upon full completion of duties
• Program Coordinator - $200-$2000 stipend depending on commitment

News blast! Cordero PTA won a $2,500 grant to compete in The American Rocketry Challenge, the world's largest rocket contest sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association, the National Association of Rocketry and more than 20 aerospace industry partners including NASA. The contest provides Cordero middle school students the opportunity to design, build, and launch competitive rockets. Led by Mr. Baker, Cordero's middle school science teacher, a pioneering team of rocketeers will take Cordero to new heights. To infinity and beyond!

Wednesday, January 15 is the next general PTA meeting. Come to the library at 6pm for pizza, meet the nominating committee, and learn about upcoming events. A recap of the meeting for teachers will be held on Thursday, January 16 at 8am in the auditorium. Meeting agenda posted on our website. 

The spring semester of Rockasorri PreK Music Classes will start on February 3rdand go on until May 11th. The cost will be $75 per child. This semester we are trying to “go green” - so instead of sending paper and envelopes, make your payment on-line at bit.ly/PreKrock. This Wednesday, January 8th from 6pm to 8pm we will have a Middle School Parent Information Session at Park Francis' 2nd floor. Parents of current 5th grade students may attend. Thank you to Mr. Jack Silbert for sharing his life experiences with our students, we learned a lot about overcoming adversity and seeing life from a different perspective after tragedy. Special thanks for parent Brendan Kuntz for bringing him to Cordero. 

Our 8th grade students will have breakfast with a cop on Thursday, January 9th. During this time, JCPD will meet with students to discuss civic and social media responsibility. They will return for future visits throughout our middle school.

Strollers have contributed to a traffic jam on our sidewalks and this disrupts the safe passage of our teachers and students. Please be mindful of where you are stopping with your strollers. Additionally, please remember that one of the key skills for our younger students is learning how to walk to school independently. If you have the time, please make the time to help your children grow.

Thank you to all students and staff that helped to make this year's holiday show a great success! All staff who worked the program volunteered their time. We thank them and appreciate them. 

Schools will be closed from December 21 through January 1. School resumes in the New Year on January 2nd. During break, please spend some time with your families and rest up.

Please receive this important reminder from the Early Childhood Department regarding the flu vaccine for any student enrolled in the Pre-K Program:

"This is just a reminder that the State of New Jersey requires children six months through 59 months of age attending any licensed childcare center or preschool facility to annually receive the influenza vaccine before December 31 of each year.

According to the law, if pre-k children do not receive the flu vaccine by December 31, 2019, he/she must be excluded from school for the flu season (through March 31st), until they receive the one dose of the influenza vaccine, or until they turn 60 months of age, unless exempt.

There is no grace period given for unvaccinated children. Therefore, children will not be able to return to school on January 2, 2020 without proof of the immunization."
