This Saturday was our first NJSLA Prep class. Students in grades 3-8 have been selected to attend by their teachers. If you are interested, please reach out to your child's teacher for further information or email head teacher Mrs. Lopez. Permission Slips for the program were sent home last week.

Important 8th Grade Meeting this Tuesday March 10 at 6pm in the Library. Parents who cannot make it then can attend at 9am on Wednesday March 11 in the Auditorium.

Pre-Kindergarten Registration Information

Please receive the following information regarding Pre-K Registration. As we are a lottery school, you can register March 2 - 31, 2020 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM only. No registrations will occur prior to March 2.

If your child is currently enrolled in Pre-K at Cordero or taking the bus to another school (PS 22 or PS 3), you do not have to register them again. You will be automatically enrolled for the following year. 

Further questions can be directed to the Pre-K Registration or the Early Childhood Department by phone: 201-915-6078.

An important note from Nurse Stone:

Your child must be fever-free for 24 hours before they can return to school. If a child has vomited they can not return to school for 24 hours. These are state as well as district policies. Please be mindful not to send your child to school if they are sick especially during this flu season. Thank you for helping to keep Cordero as healthy as possible. 

Information regarding the coronavirus can be found on the CDC's website. No cases have been found in NJ. District Statement

The YMCA Program is expanding offerings over the weekends for arts and recreation. Please see their flyer on the Sunday Digest for more information.

PTA NEWS 

The next general PTA meeting will be Wednesday, March 18, 6pm in the Library. Come for a slice of pizza and learn about upcoming PTA events, initiatives. Check our website for past meeting minutes and agendas.

The 2nd annual Parent-to-Parent Discussion will be held Tuesday, March 31, 7pm - 8:30pm. Learn from Cordero parents about Kindergarten - 5th grade.

The faculty of Cordero would like to thank Mrs. Amiri Allen and Mrs. Petal Gadsden for their tremendous work supporting our student Black History Month performances. Mrs. Allen's vision and hard work along with Mrs. Gadsden's emcee responsibilities made the event happen. The work of our students and teachers Mr. Mulholland and Mrs. Largmann demonstrated tremendous performances.

This Wednesday, March 4 is the STEM Skating Trip for all Middle School Students. Please make sure students are in their gym uniform this Wednesday. Any further questions can be directed to Ms. Poznanski.

This week is Sneak-A-Peek Week in which families can see the grade their children will move up to next year. Pre-K Registration begins this week as well. More information is available on the Early Childhood website and the Sunday Digest Blog below.

This week we are also celebrating Literacy Spirit Week with a variety of activities celebrating the life of Dr. Seuss and our joy of reading. Special activities and outfit descriptions are listed below. Monday is a tag day for school-appropriate pajamas and Friday is a tag day for jeans with a red and blue top. Each are $1. Please consult with your child's teacher for further questions.

Wednesday March 4, 6:00pm, the PTA Special Education/Title I Committee invites all families to A Child's Beautiful Mind, a free workshop with founder of Advanced Therapy of America (ATA). Light snacks will be provided.  Email antonia@ps37pta.org for further information.

Friday, March 6, from 5-7pm in the gym, PTA's hugely popular Family Maker Night returns with Rise of Artemis. Free and open to all Cordero families, come to have fun with all things science! We'll have food, raffle prizes and a booth to support Cordero's Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts. RSVP at http://bit.ly/mar6maker.

At Cordero we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we are preparing a presentation for our students on February 26th. We need students in grades 3-8 to perform speeches, poetry, dance and singing.

Mandatory rehearsals for all students performing in the Black History Assembly tomorrow at 3:30pm and Tuesday at 2:45pm

We have begun our annual support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients program. Our students will collect for this worthy charity throughout this month. See the grade level pages here:

Please note that we will have a middle school dance presented by the Student Council on Friday, February 21st from 5 to 7:45p. The cost is $5 and students may purchase tickets from Student Council officers or get in touch with Ms. McInerney. 

We want to thank Ms. Towers for spearheading a successful candygram fundraiser for the Spanish Honors Society. 

Thank you to Ms. Poznanski for organizing and supporting the STEAM Skate Trip for all students in grades 3-5. It was a rolling success and we anticipate including more grades next year. 

Thank you to Ms. Poznanski for supporting our 8th graders in their high school selection process by visiting all of the schools for Hello/Hola Week. Lincoln High School will be visiting us to show off their culinary and cosmetology Small Learning Communities soon, stay tuned. 

With that said, 8th graders need to complete their HIP applications no later than Friday, February 21st. All 8th grade students must complete an application and it must be signed by a parent/guardian. Please check with Ms. Poznanski for more questions.

Boys and girls basketball tryouts continue this week. All players must have an approved physical from the nurse, passing grades in all subjects, good behavior in all classes, and always in his/her school uniform to be eligible to make the team. PTA NEWS 

Thank you to all the families and students who participated in last week's Internet Safety Day, sponsored by Google and National PTA. A survey link has been emailed to all participants. Pictures will be shared on our Facebook page. 

Enrichment spring semester begins this week. Enrichment is 100% volunteer run by parents. We still need Class Parent Assistants and a Program Coordinator to continue the program. Please contact enrichment@ps37pta.org for more information.

Tuesday, February 18, 6pm is the JCBOE Parent Committee Meeting. Held at Dickinson High School auditorium, the speaker for this meeting will be Mayor Fulop. Bring your concerns and bring a friend. Welcome and open to all.
