12.15.2019

We would like to take a moment to honor fallen Detective Seals for his bravery in the tragic shooting spree last Tuesday. In cooperation with a district dress down effort we are asking the entire Cordero Community to share your financial support to the family throughout this week. Students and Staff can contribute by placing their donations inside the box on the security desk. The district will collect this money and support the family in the new year.

With regards to our own incident that was spread through social media over a week ago, the police continue their investigation. Please note that there was no credible threat to Cordero at any time last week. Additionally, the accused student was completely exonerated by the Jersey City Police Department. Those responsible for the made up threat continue to be investigated by the JCPD and consequences both in court and in school will be applied to the students founded to be a part of it. Since the investigation continues to be under the jurisdiction of the JCPD, there is nothing else to report at this time. If there is information regarding the fake threat that you have, you are encouraged to speak to the JCPD directly.

Last week we spoke with students and staff regarding the situation reminding them they are safe in school. Should they feel otherwise, they should seek out help from their teachers or the school counselors. This also includes any feelings that may be brought up due to the tragic events this past Tuesday. Please contact my office should you have any further concerns.

As part of the Holiday Celebrations at Cordero, each classroom has participated in the Holiday Door Decorating Contest. Classes were tasked with creating a curriculum-based door that touches upon a holiday theme. The full set of doors can be seen by clicking here. We need your votes to determine our internet winners. Click here to vote for your favorite! Voting closes at 3pm on Tuesday, December 17th.

On Tuesday, students and staff can come in jeans and wear their version of an ugly sweater free of charge. We cannot wait to see the wonderful creations that come on Tuesday!

Also on Tuesday December 17th is our Annual Holiday Show. This is an event showcasing students in Pre-K 4 through grade 2.

With the Holiday show, there are a number of changes to our CASPER and YMCA dismissal procedures. First, CASPER students can be picked up in the cafeteria by entering the door at Pavonia Ave. and Erie St. starting at 5:30. YMCA students can be picked up through the main entrance.

With regards to our show, all students performing in the show must enter at 5:45. Students in 1st grade and Kindergarten will enter the door on Erie St. and Ninth St. Students in Pre-K4 and 2nd grade will enter through the door at Erie St. and Pavonia Ave.

Please note that no more tickets will be sold and tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Ticket holders for the Holiday Show will enter through the alley door on Ninth St. That door will open at 6:15. The show is set to begin at 6:30.

On Wednesday, December 18th, students in grades 3-8 will attend Movies at the Mall. On Thursday, December 19th students in Pre-K 3 through 2nd grade will attend. The movie this year is Frozen 2 and all attendees must pay $8. Many classes are doing holiday celebrations afterwards. Please contact your child's teacher for further information.

Attention 8th grade parents, student permission slips for chocolate will be due before Friday this week. Please contact your child's teacher for more information.

On Friday December 20, we will have a 12:45 dismissal. There will be NO after school programming that day. There will be NO CASPER, YMCA, Enrichment, Extended Day or Boys & Girls Club. Please ensure that you pick up your child on time so our staff can begin their Winter Break as well.

Schools will be closed from December 21 through January 1. School resumes in the New Year on January 2nd.

In the new year, we will have many exciting things happening at Cordero including a Middle School Open House. More information is available at https://corderoopenhouse.app.rsvpify.com/

Please also do not forget to purchase your tickets to the 10th Annual Cordero Dinner Dance happening on Friday, February 7th from 6:30 to 11. If you would like to be a sponsor or know a business who would like to sponsor the event, please consult our sponsorship information sheet.

Please receive this important reminder from the Early Childhood Department regarding the flu vaccine for any student enrolled in the Pre-K Program:

"This is just a reminder that the State of New Jersey requires children six months through 59 months of age attending any licensed childcare center or preschool facility to annually receive the influenza vaccine before December 31 of each year.
According to the law, if pre-k children do not receive the flu vaccine by December 31, 2019, he/she must be excluded from school for the flu season (through March 31st), until they receive the one dose of the influenza vaccine, or until they turn 60 months of age, unless exempt.
There is no grace period given for unvaccinated children. Therefore, children will not be able to return to school on January 2, 2020 without proof of the immunization."

Reminders:
If you are new to our community, please sign up for emails by filling out this form. Please also provide your email to the main office so they can ensure it is on Infinite Campus.

Parents that use strollers to transport children, please be advised that we need to keep our entry doors clear. Strollers have contributed to a traffic jam on our sidewalks and this disrupts the safe passage of our teachers and students. Please be mindful of where you are stopping with your strollers. Additionally, please remember that one of the key skills for our younger students is learning how to walk to school independently. If you have the time, please make the time to help your children grow.
